Yes, I did. After checking my driver’s license and finding my name in the “great book of voters,” I signed a list, was handed a paper ballot, and an ink pen. When I turned to go to a booth, I discovered that there were no booths, but large round tables where voters carefully avoided looking at other voters. Where were those sophisticated voting machines, or the booths divided into fours with curtains?  To be honest, I enjoyed the freedom to sit at a table and openly cast my vote without fear or worry. I wanted to discuss what we were doing with the other voters, but thought that might not be appreciated.

Have you wondered why God chose to place you in a  demoncracy, a nation that encourages involvement in the whos and hows of our country? Whether you were born here or came as an immigrant, the Psalmist reminds us of God’s initiative in our lives, Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed (Psalms 139:16 NRSV). Surely it isn’t a mistake that you are living in a free land.

As we begin the month of November, our minds turn to thankfulness. So today I say thank you for the privilege I have  to influence not only a nation, but the entire world because of my freedom.

Once again, I encourage you to read the Extreme Devotion Series by Kathi Macias. Here is her newest novel, Red Ink.
