“And forgive us our debts.” —Matthew 6:12

Forgiveness lives at the heart of true Christianity. No other religious system offers such complete removal of sin and new life. Yet those of us who approach the Father are asked to incorporate in our prayers to ask for forgiveness: “forgive us our debts.”

Why pray for forgiveness when we have already been forgiven? If we follow the risen Christ, our sins are no more. Yet our sins are called “debts,” indicating our need for “credit” from God. Without His removal of our debts, we remain stained by the daily impact of our human failings. Such understanding is essential to spiritual growth; such acknowledgement is required for the humility God seeks. Let us ask Him for forgiveness; let us walk in newness of life.
